Heading to NYC in the Morning

It's the only pic I have of the City right now...

I’m heading to New York City tomorrow morning with my good friend, Anne.  Early. . . very early.  One of the local art organizations organized this bus trip, which will drop us off at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Avenue in New York City.  From what I understand the Cézanne’s Card Players Exhibition is at the Met and the American Watercolor Society Exhibition is currently on display at the Salmagundi Art Club.  The day promises to be inspiring with a bonus visit in the City from my son, Michael, his wife Kathy and Gracie!   Stop by later for pics and chatter about the trip.

Made it to VT

Here's my kid... JonBoy and Whittle

Here's my kid... JonBoy and Whittle, the sweetest most affectionate cat ever!

I made it to VT!

The drive to Vermont was relaxing as it usually is and while spring has arrived here in Upstate New York mother nature hasn’t released her sprouts and buds in abundance just yet.   The vestiges of winter remain as a reminder of what a long winter we have endured.

Saturday was warm and sunny; a perfect day to drive north toward Vermont to visit my oldest son, Jonathan, and his wife, Calico.  Just to clarify things, Jonathan is exactly one minute older than his twin brother, Michael.   A minute is a minute that has bestowed the title of “oldest” on Jonathan though he is still my little chick . . . always will be to me.

Both of my chickens have settled away from the home front and if that had to be the case at least Vermont is an easy drive away.   Plus there’s something about Vermont and it’s earthy all-natural feeling.  Perhaps it’s because they limit roadside signage and everyone seems to own a dog or two.  With the weather mild and sunny people and pooches were on every street corner wagging and chatting having been released from winter’s incarceration.

I arrived just before noon making it in good time at 2 1/2 hours total, including two stops and my adhering to the speed limit in most cases.   Oscar and Adobe – Jonathan and Calico’s Rhodesian Ridgebacks – greeted me with  deep and authoritative barking, but after a cursory sniff welcomed me into their pack.

The trip was to be overnighter so there was time to sit and talk, getting really caught up after doing the house and garden tour.   I so enjoy spending blocks of time together without rushing and then being involved in the daily routine.

It was an easy going day.  After enjoying a cup of Green Mountain coffee we walked the dogs (so Vermonty) and then settle in to watch The Masters for awhile.  Jonathan is a golf enthusiastic (fanatic really) and the TV screen was green all afternoon.   It was so nice and I’m interested in whatever my kids do and are interested in.  If golf is it then I want to hear all about it!

My kids will always be my kids to me and are cut from my cloth . . . we’re a part of each other. . . but they are not really mine.  Never were in truth.  They’re a gift from God that I was honored enough to be a vehicle for, but I’m proud,  I’m proud as if I had something to do with the fine young men they are, I revel in it for the day.  I’m Mom again a title I wear with honor.  Mom again…

Dust Off the Flamingos – Spring Has Arrived!

Spring Flamingos

Spring Flamingos

My day away from work was very busy and the weather was absolutely awesome!  The crocuses are blooming and the flamingos are beginning to frolic.

I’m feeling so energized and that can at least be partially attributed to my weight loss added to the fact that I’m finally following my dream.  I don’t know how things will turn out and even though I do have this image tucked inside my head I don’t know for sure what it will look like down the road.

But I can say that whatever happens I am content with the process right now.  The planning, plotting and working – doing all I can then leaving things up to God is all I can really do.  I trust.  It’s as simple as that.

Tomorrow I’ll be heading to Vermont to visit with my son, Jonathan, and his wife, Calico.  I’m really looking forward to it.  Better get some rest as I hope to be on the road by nine.

There and Back Home Again

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

I made it there and back home again – to Long Island that is!

It was so nice to see Michael, Kathy and, of course, my granddaughter Grace.  We haven’t been together since Thanksgiving so this visit was much overdue.  Long stretches between our visits is unavoidable really.   We each lead lives that are busy with basic survival tasks like working, groceries, laundry and the like, and though we do stay in touch via telephone I don’t have to tell you it just isn’t the same.

Nothing can beat . . . “Grandma, will you play with me?” . . . “Grandma, will you play with me?” . . .  “Grandma. . .”

My reply, “Of course, I’ll play with you,” as I climb off the couch onto the floor and am grateful I’ve lost a pound or two making this downward trek easier.

Grace, now almost 2 1/2, knows her own mind and makes the rules when a commitment is made to play together.  They’re good rules really, rules we might want to incorporate into our everyday lives.

So . . . here they are – The Rules According to Grace:

Rule #1 – No multitasking is allowed.   If you’re playing, just play.

Rule # 2 – No conversations across the room; talk and listen to who you’re with.

Rule #3 – When you’re playing stay focused.

Rule #4 – Don’t get so hung up on how to play, just play.  Dumping things in a pile is fine.

Rule #5 – It’s okay to sing “Frosty the Snow Man” year round!

Rule No. 6 – When you’re at the Mall look at everything and ask lots of questions later.

Rule No. 7 – Take a nap if you need one.

Rule No. 8 – Snack often.

Rule No. 9 – Always ask for three minutes more if you’re having fun.

Rule No. 10 – Give and receive hugs liberally.

The two full days spent together was such fun (and tiring), but mostly fun. There’s nothing like grandmotherhood but I can’t emphasize enough that God knew what he was doing when he made the younger set the parents and we the older set the grands.

As I settle back into my life I miss them already.

Sentimental Chatter

Brothers... That's Jonathan (L) & Michael. They're grown up now but to me they'll always be little!

The morning temperature is -4 degrees!  Oh my! I could tell it was cold as I opened the door to let Penny out and a gust of bitter cold air rushed inside and surrounded my bare legs.  Brrr….!

This winter season has been relentless and cold as the dickens, not to mention the mounds of snow that still tower in white along the roadways.  Luckily there is no snow in the forecast since I’ll be on the road shortly for a long drive – nearly 200 miles – to Long Island where I’ll be visiting my son (Michael) and his family (Kathy and Grace).   I’d better pack some extra woolly and warm clothes for my trip Downstate.

The cycle of life is a funny and interesting thing.  We raise our children from infancy to become caring and responsible adults and when they emerge into the most amazing people you’re proud.  My “little chickens” (my twin sons) have both settled away from home – one in Vermont and the other on Long Island.  I wonder sometimes why we can’t all live closer to one another, but that was not to be.  I am lucky that we are a relatively short drive away from each other and that they both have built happy and independent lives.  That’s what we want for our children (no doubt) and we then find lives of our own without them around on a day-to-day basis.  So when we can converge and spend a few days together it’s something to savor.

Well . . . enough of that sentimental chatter.  I’ve gotta get going!

I’m getting ready to travel tomorrow morning, first thing.  It’s been a couple of months since I’ve seen my son Michael and his family who live on Long Island and I’m looking very much forward to it.  More later . . . gotta get packing.

Snow Day

Morning Commute #1

This is what it looked like this morning at 8:30 a.m. as I headed for work. The roads were so snow covered that it didn't look like the plows had been through at all though I'm sure they had been.

Rough going this morning.  My typical commute takes about an hour or so from door-to-door.   This morning . . . two and a half hours.  My motto is “I’m going slow so feel free to go around me!”  Some do and some don’t.  Either way we each need to approach things in our own way at our own pace.  Snow or no snow!

Stuck in traffic

Stuck in traffic. I was fine with the stop and go slow on the NYS Thruway this morning. Slow gets you there in one piece. I'm cool with that.

Weekend in VT

VT Bound

VT Bound

I headed north early Saturday morning.  Destination Vermont, Rutland to be exact.  My son, Jonathan (JonBoy) and his wife, Calico, live in Rutland and it’s been a while since I visited.

I’ve always loved Vermont and find the energy there refreshing and restorative.   So . . . un-New York, which in my opinion tends to edgy, short-tempered and hurried.  The people in Vermont appear to be more relaxed, funky, earthy and everyone seems to own a dog.

Green Mountain Hug

I could be misreading the Vermont energy, though I doubt it.  I swear that I can feel it every time when rounding that bend on Route 4 toward Rutland and I catch my first glimpse of the mountains.   Those mountains. . .they seem to pull me in, wrap their arms around me and wash away all my troubles.   If only for a moment, it feels good and I want more.

JonBoy and Calico are the epitome of Vermont life.  Their home is all natural – pottery, leather and 100% cotton with Phish posters adorning all the walls.  Plus they own two dogs – Oscar and Adobe – both Rhodesian Ridgebacks.  They ski, hike and eat more healthy foods than anyone I know.  Vermont suits them.

With my stress level in the red zone for quite sometime this trip to Vermont was long overdue.  JonBoy and I spent the day together while Calico was at work.   We just hung out – the perfect Vermont thing to do – and then we took the dogs for a walk through the soft powder at the local golf course.

I met Ziggy and Lucky, two West Highland Terriers and their parents plus Guinness a Labrador Retriever and his dad.  In true VT style we walked and talked and every so often JonBoy would turn and ask, “Are you okay Mom?” a dead give away that I am indeed an out-of-towner, a New Yorker (albeit Upstate) no less.

In the evening we just chilled (another perfect VT thing to do) after enjoying a pasta dinner with Calico’s Arugula/Strawberry/Walnut/Feta Cheese salad and bread sticks with roasted garlic and Asiago Cheese!  My VT weekend was way too short, but I take with me the memory and a belly full of the best waffles this side of the Green Mountains!

Reluctantly Heading Home

Adirondack Bound

I’ll be heading off to Old Forge in the Adirondacks on Wednesday with my friend Anne.  It promises to be an art-filled couple of days since we’ll be stopping at the Hyde in Glens Falls on our way north to take in the Andrew Wyeth exhibit.  From what I understand the Wyeth exhibit includes pencil, watercolor and egg tempera works – right up my alley!  On Thursday we’ll be heading off to the Art Center – Old Forge to take in the Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors show that just opened on August 21st.

I’m truly hoping for inspiration and a jump start to what has been an artistic dryspell lately.  I think what would be best for me is to focus on sketching, both pencil and watercolor sketching, without so much focus on finished work.  The hope is this approach will release some spontaniety and freedom to loosen up and get the creative juices flowing.  Sounds like a good plan to me…

I’ll post again on Sunday.  Till then… get out your crayons and color like you’re a kid again!

Our Flower Girl

Gracie

Grace

Last weekend was my nephew, Jeremy, and Andrea’s wedding.  My granddaughter, Grace, was asked to be  their flower girl about a year or so ago.  Truthfully, her parents were asked and they consented with a disclaimer.  Grace would be only 20 months old on their wedding day and anything could happen.

Last Saturday was sunny and hot with excitement filling the air.  In typical wedding festivity fashion there was satin, flowers and crinoline all around.   Gracie was paired up with a sweet young man who was serious and proficient in his duties as the ring bearer.  During rehearsal the night before the nuptials the two of them “clicked” and after several successful dry runs down the aisle it seemed possible that Grace would be the best flower girl ever!

Many kudos go to Michael and Kathy for preparing Grace for the event, but even with the most meticulous preparations little kids are unpredictable.  Who could have predicted that Grace would walk down the aisle with nearly 200 onlookers, smile at just the right moment for her pic with the bride and groom and then dance the night away in her mother and father’s arms until late into the night all without complaint.

What a kid!  That’s my granddaughter Grace in case you don’t already know!
