Artist Bio

Tulip Festival 2007
Thank you for allowing me introduce myself to you.
I am Lorraine (Rainey) Dewey, an artist, mother of twin sons, Jonathan and Michael, and grandmother to Grace, Michael and Matthew (also twins). I live, work and paint in Upstate New York having moved here with my parents and four siblings in 1969.
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t drawing or painting something. Early on it was horses, mushrooms and ballerinas, but it wasn’t until 1987 (at the urging of my mother) after attending an adult education class at our local high school that creating art became an unquenchable passion.
My formal art education has been limited to high school art, adult education classes and two drawing classes at Sage Evening College in Albany, New York. Primarily, I would consider myself to be self-taught the old-fashioned way at the school of “trial and error.”
My style is realism and my subjects consist of the world around me. I gain inspiration from the rural setting in which I live, my love of the land and open spaces. My ultimate goal is to work full-time as an artist while teaching beginner and intermediate artists, but until then I am grateful for my typing and computer skills.
I am blessed to have received awards for my watercolor and graphite work from time-to-time (see awards list below) and while it is great to be recognized the real joy is in the creating. One of the many things I have learned through the art is that there is always more we can learn and if we persevere and practice and remain open to new ideas our God-given talent can improve and there are no limits to the heights we can reach. I’m still reaching and always will be I suspect.
