I find the countryside and our local farms are one of the most inspiring subjects around. The dedication it takes to run a farm and tend livestock is without measure. The love of that lifestyle must be immense. I can only imagine the demands of a full blown farming operation - rising with sun, feeding the hungry animals in your care and afterward tending to all the farm chores. How I admire and envy them.
I did catch a glimpse of that lifestyle when I had a horse of my very own many years ago. Finally, at thirty-something my dream of owning a horse came true. I remember the day she came to our place - Velvet’s Keisha - a three quarter Arabian mare. What beauty! She was a bay with a white blaze and every morning when I went to the barn she would nicker, knowing I was there to feed. Only the best molasses sweetened oats and alfalfa hay for my very own horse!
I loved those mornings and haven’t gotten out of bed so easily and so early since those days. I would do it again if I had the chance. Oh how I miss my Velvet’s Keisha.

There’s just so darned much to learn! Please excuse my profanity, but there really is a world of things I just plain don’t know.
And when it comes to painting the only way to really learn is to practice - practice and explore new subjects. I tend to stick with things I consider safe; things I’ve painted many times before with relative success. My nasty little “safety net approach” to painting has held me back and I believe kept me from finding my niche artistically.
And after all these years of painting I’ve still many new frontiers to explore and since I’m not a full-time artist (yet) - I earn my “survival cash” as a secretary - it may take me a little longer to find my place in the art world.
One of many great lessons I’ve learned is that no matter how overwhelmed I may become about how much there is to learn there is no chance of Rainey giving up. I’ll paint and draw and read and learn from other artists with joy and anticipation.
The truth is I may never find my niche, but I’ll never give up the search. My intention is to enjoy my creativity and share what I can so long as I’m here on this earthly plane.
Creativity feeds my soul and brings peace when there seems to be none. Turning my back on this gift from God is not an option. I am grateful.

Finally, it’s Saturday. My week has been a long and busy week one and this weekend promises to be a short and busy one.
I suspect things will be hectic around here until our house is sold and beyond. Moving is a tough business. After my divorce in 1995 I moved several times. From here to there and from there to here. Always looking for something that was inside me all along - if only I’d looked there first.
Finally though I realized that the external stuff in life is fleeting and in order to get through the rough patches you’d better have tucked away some inner reserves. I’ve found that the strength and inner peace I’ve been seeking can only be found in the hand of God.
I’ve been blessed with a loving family and supportive, loyal friends. Not throngs, just a few quality people with sound advice to offer or a strong shoulder to lean on from time-to-time. And finally after all these years I like my own company. The fact that I’m peaceful while being alone is quite an accomplishment for me.
Well… enough chatter for now. I’d better get packin’ and cleanin’ as the realtor will be here Monday to take a few pics.

I’ll bet you thought I’d forgotten it’s Art Auction Saturday. Nope… I surely didn’t, but today was busy and now that half the crew has settled into bed for the night I’ve got a few minutes to chat.
Michael, Kathy and Grace are still here and I’ve got them for just a few more hours as they’re heading for home in the morning. It’s been nice - having them here - and all the liveliness they bring by just walking in the door has been a breath of fresh air for me. The unending chatter and laughter brings our house to life and when they walk out the door and head for home this house will fall into a lonely silence once again.
It’s at those times - the times of letting go over and over again - that I find comfort in my art. I will immerse myself in the the process of creating art and allow this gift to bring me closer to the hand of God where I find there is great solace.
We raise our children to be strong, independent people and sometimes their life path will take them to distant places - geographically speaking. But the bond you create during those early years will keep you connected for a lifetime and while you must let them walk out the door to head for home - you know you are all still connected through a deep and abiding love that no distance can diminish.

Spring…As I sit here at my computer with the front door open I can feel the cool spring air brush across my arm. It feels great and smells great. Spring always feels to me like endless possibilities. It’s a time for change and a time for a fresh start. When the early spring plants begin to push their way out of the moist, cold earth they signal this transition, this transformation the earth will begin to make.
I’m preparing my own personal transition and transformation. How timely that it will materialize at this time of year. Shedding the heavy winter wear and donning cotton or linen with a lightweight sweater is symbolic for the internal shedding I’m working toward.
As I get ready to head out to the gardens to see if our tulips have begun to push through the ground I realize it won’t be long before they’re in full bloom. I will follow their lead and push my way through the maze that is my life and get ready to bloom myself. I intend to enjoy this spring like no other with the new awareness I’ve been developing over these months looking forward with no guarantees, but optimistic nonetheless.

Gosh, I can’t believe the week is gone and I’m here enjoying another Saturday! It was a tiring week since I’ve been fighting a head cold, but I’m feeling much better and plan to get the home front tidied up a bit today. Tonight Tom and I have dinner and concert plans! We’re meeting Bet and Conrad for dinner and then we’re off to Proctor’s Theater, in Schenectady, New York for the “Sixties Spectacular.” The Sixties Spectacular concert features Peter Noone (Herman’s Hermits), Davy Jones of the Monkey’s and the Grass Roots! I’m pumped.
My sister and I just loved all their music and when I listen to it now I’m transported to a time when I was a kid and things were simpler. We were living in Alabama in the 1960’s and were somewhat insulated from the “free love” and drugs that the 60’s have become known for. All us “Dewey’s” were innocent and looking back I’m glad of that. Bethy and I would dance with great abandon while watching ourselves in the mirror. We were good dancers (or so we thought) and danced the jerk, the swim, the pony, and the monkey over and over again. Oh how fun!
Those were good days. I’m lucky to have experienced them! Can’t wait… Mrs. Brown you’ve got a lovely daughter….Daydream Believer….Midnight Confessions…. Good stuff! LaLaLa! Gotta practice my singing so I can accompany them all tonight! LaLaLaaaaaa! Cool I sound good inspite of my cold! Lalalalala!

My Space No. 179 is one in a series of celestial images I’ve been painting. These images are inspired by photos take by the Hubble Telescope. They are great fun to paint and the outcome never assured. It’s a great way to let loose and just play with the paint.

I found the watering can in this still life at one of our local junk shops many years ago. It had such charm and even though it was dented and obviously well used I had to have it. I expressed my interest and inquired as to the price.
“Go ahead and take it,” the shop owner said.
“Are you sure?” I asked in disbelief. All that charm and FREE I thought.
“Absolutely,” he confirmed.
With his generous permission I took it home and now after many more seasons of use, and a little duct tape to seal a pin hole in the bottom, it’s usefulness has never waned, it’s usefulness would not be stopped by a little leak. In summer this old watering can sits in a place of honor on the steps near my kitchen door. Worn, used and mended this old watering can is my favorite garden tool.
