Hair Stylist – Me!

My hair has been on my mind quite a bit lately.  Maybe it’s because my bangs are almost grown out enough to be pulled back into a ponytail without using a hair clip or bobby pin.  Thank heaven!

My husband, Tom, told me not to do it, but I insisted that I wanted bangs.  I knew I’d look just like Marie Osmond or maybe Emmy Lou Harris, long straight bangs that would frame my face.  I’d look stunning and funky, I was sure of it.

Unfortunately, my hair doesn’t lend itself to straightness and is more of an unruly mop.  From the start my new bangs were a mistake, but don’t tell Tom.  The “I told ya so’s,” would be brutal.

Anyway, I’ve been wearing my hair long and self-styled for quite sometime, but I knew that my new bangs would need to be at least started by a professional.   Being a self-styler, salon appointments are a rare event for me.  When I actually do schedule an appointment, I make sure to watch the stylist intently, taking mental notes for my future home trimming.

I can do this… I’m thinking. Wet, comb, clip, measure - little sections at a time - comb, clip, measure… I’m on it. I got it.

After a few home trimming events, the professional’s touch has long been lost to my own wild snipping.  I could, of course, go back to a professional stylist to get things fixed, but that would be too easy.  Instead I continue to clip and comb, sometimes on wet hair and sometimes on dry hair.   I got so crazy with my clipping and cutting that I’ve taken to trimming the back of my hair - you don’t want to know….

I finally decided to grow my bangs out after I’d clipped myself some Elvis type sideburns - what a sight.  I can tell you this, those little hairs on the face side of your ears, should be left alone unless you would indeed like to have sideburns and enter an Elvis look-a-like contest.

I believe I’ve learned my lesson.  No more self-styling for a while and no salon appointment either.  I think I’ll just stick to pulling the whole mess back into a ponytail or bun until my niece, Kathleen, finishes cosmetology training.  Kathleen… hurry…. I’m going for the scissors again…!
